Background

There is a big accessibility gap existing in products all around us, especially in cosmetics. While Grace focuses on something as small as the application of mascara, enabling someone to perform a simple, confidence-building task can elevate the quality of life. Grace is a series of universal add-ons that can be used to make beauty products more accessible and inclusive.

Prototyping & co-designing

Through a mix of user research, industrial design, prototyping, and user testing, we worked towards a series of validated prototypes.

During the process, we designed closely with people with arthritis, tremors, cerebral palsy, and various dexterity challenges, which provided invaluable insights to address the ergonomics, material choices, and aesthetic decisions.

The product

This process resulted in three different types of grip add-ons to the standard mascara applicators and can be reused with every new mascara. Each grip is designed to support the physical needs of the individual.

The Ring Grip

The Ring Grip comes with a circular attachment designed to fit around your finger. Meaning users don’t have to grip tightly or worry about dropping it.

The Safe Grip

With two oversized rubber ball attachments, the Safe Grip allows for a wide open-handed grip with minimal finger flexion, avoiding the difficulties arising from a standard smooth and narrow grip.

The Square Grip

Presented in a discrete package, the Square Grip consists of two parts and attaches to both ends of the mascara. The rubber ribbing facilitates the application as well as twisting the lid on and off.
